Intense Pulse Light Laser Therapy

What Is IPL Therapy?

Intense Pulsed Light (IPL) therapy is an advanced, non-invasive treatment option for patients experiencing chronic dry eye symptoms related to meibomian gland dysfunction (MGD) and ocular surface inflammation. Highland Ophthalmology is proud to offer this cutting-edge technology as part of our comprehensive approach to eye comfort and ocular surface health.

Why IPL Can Help Dry Eye and MGD

Dry eye disease and MGD occur when the oil-producing glands in the eyelids are not functioning properly. Meibomian gland dysfunction can lead to an unstable tear film, excessive evaporation of tears, irritation, burning, redness, and discomfort.

IPL therapy works by delivering controlled, regulated pulses of light to the treatment area to help:

  • Improve meibomian gland function
  • Reduce eyelid inflammation and abnormal blood vessels
  • Enhance the quality and stability of your tear film Patients often report increased comfort, less burning and irritation, and brighter eyes after a series of sessions.

About the E-Eye Device (E-Swin USA)

Highland Ophthalmology uses the E-Eye Intense Regulated Pulsed Light (IRPL®) Device, a specialized IPL system designed for dry eye care and meibomian gland stimulation. This device delivers precisely controlled light pulses tailored to stimulate the glands that produce the oily layer of your tears.

  • FDA-cleared in the U.S. for rosacea and widely used worldwide for dry eye/MGD management with clinician discretion
  • Non-invasive and safe when performed by trained eye care professionals
  • Quick treatment sessions—usually only a few minutes per eye
  • Most patients are comfortable throughout the process
  • No downtime—normal activities can resume immediately after.

What to Expect During Treatment

IPL treatment with the E-Eye typically follows a standardized protocol:

  1. Consultation and Evaluation – We assess your symptoms, tear film quality, and meibomian gland function to determine if IPL is right for you.
  2. Preparation – Protective eye shields are placed and a light gel is applied to your skin.
  3. Light Pulses Delivered – A series of gentle pulses are directed beneath the eyelids. A brief sequence is repeated for both eyes.
  4. Aftercare – Patients often feel relief shortly after the session, with cumulative improvement over multiple treatments.

Most treatment plans involve 3–4 sessions spaced over several weeks with periodic maintenance as needed for long-term relief.

Who Is a Candidate for IPL?

IPL may benefit patients who:

  • Experience chronic dry eye symptoms
  • Have signs of meibomian gland dysfunction
  • Continue to experience discomfort despite standard therapies such as lubricating drops and warm compresses.

Not all patients are suitable for IPL therapy (for example, certain skin types, medical conditions, or contraindications may apply); our doctors will evaluate your individual case during your consultation.

Is IPL Covered by Insurance?

IPL therapy for dry eye/MGD is often considered an elective treatment and may not be covered by insurance. Our team will discuss costs and options with you before your first session.
