Amniotic Membrane Therapy
CAM360 AmnioGraft™ and PROKERA® – Advanced Amniotic Membrane Options
Highland Ophthalmology offers advanced amniotic membrane therapy for patients with corneal disease ranging from dry eye disease to sight-threatening ocular surface diseases.
CAM360 is a hydrated, cryopreserved amniotic membrane designed to promote healing of the corneal surface in patients with mild-to-moderate dry eye disease and other superficial corneal conditions. Like PROKERA, the traditional version of cryopreserved amniotic membrane clipped into a flexible ring, it harnesses the natural anti-inflammatory, anti-scarring, and regenerative properties of amniotic tissue to support epithelial healing and improve ocular comfort.
Unlike the ring-mounted design of PROKERA®, CAM360 is ringless and flexible, allowing it to be placed directly onto the eye and secured under a bandage contact lens. It is also shelf-stable at room temperature, offering streamlined storage and convenience without compromising biologic activity.
Your doctor will determine which amniotic membrane option is most appropriate based on the severity of your condition, comfort considerations, and overall treatment goals.
What These Amniotic Membrane Therapies Treat
- All stages of dry eye disease not responding to conventional therapy
- Recurrent corneal erosions, painful epithelial defects, and persistent epithelial defects
- Keratitis (inflammation of the cornea)
- Corneal ulcers and scars
- Chemical burns, trauma, and other surface injuries
- Partial limbal stem cell deficiency and complex ocular surface diseases with significant inflammation
The device is intended to reduce inflammation, minimize scarring, and support natural tissue repair while protecting the eye as healing progresses.
Frequently Asked Questions
What should I expect during treatment?
Both treatments are performed in your doctor’s office and typically only take a few minutes to place. The doctor will use topical anesthetic (numbing drops) before insertion.
Is it painful?
- CAM360 AmnioGraft: Because it is ringless and placed under a bandage contact lens or shield, it is generally well-tolerated and often more comfortable for early surface disease.
- PROKERA®: Most patients do not experience pain during insertion because numbing drops are used. You may feel a sensation of something in the eye or mild awareness of the ring, especially early in treatment, but it is usually not painful.
Some patients may feel mild irritation, pressure, or awareness of the device for a short period after placement, but this typically improves as the eye adjusts and healing begins.
How long are the devices worn?
- CAM360 is usually used under a bandage contact lens or collagen shield for a short course determined by your doctor.
- PROKERA® is typically left in place for several days (commonly 3–5) while the amniotic membrane gradually dissolves and healing progresses.
Will it hurt after the procedure?
Some discomfort or mild foreign-body sensation can occur as your eye heals, but significant pain is uncommon. Your doctor may prescribe lubricating or anti-inflammatory drops to help comfort and reduce inflammation while the membrane is in place.
Will this improve my vision?
While the primary goal is healing and reducing inflammation, many patients notice improved comfort and clearer vision as the ocular surface becomes healthier. Vision can be blurred temporarily while the membrane is in place, but it typically clears as healing progresses.
Are these treatments safe?
Both PROKERA® and CAM360 use amniotic membrane tissue donated from screened, healthy mothers and are processed under FDA-regulated tissue standards. They are considered safe and effective when used under appropriate medical supervision.
